When a publicly-traded utility company in Southern New Jersey began planning their largest-ever design-build project, they called on the Kiely Family of Companies: sharing their vision, and partnering with Kiely to make it happen.
In the design phase, a project manager was assigned as the single point of contact between the customer and project team. Kiely team members collaborated with the customer to create a full- service design package, ensuring that the solution created would strictly comply to local municipality guidelines and address the needs of all stakeholders, while helping the customer increase efficiency and scale their services.
Challenges
- 8-month long construction phase
- Over 5 miles of 16” replacement pipe
- Urban environment and critical roads for emergency response affected
This project required planning and construction across multiple towns, with heavy work needed right in the heart of an urban community. A project of this magnitude happening right in the middle of everyday life requires a substantial amount of coordination. By communicating effectively with all stakeholders, our teams are able to solve issues before they even happened.
Solution
The goal of this project was to upgrade the aging infrastructure, delivering state-of-the-art reliability, minimizing disruptions and building goodwill as a representative of our customer and the neighborhoods they serve.
Once the design was approved, a diverse team of Kiely experts began extensive collaboration with the customer and local stakeholders, to control potential impact on densely-populated areas, economic and city hubs, hospitals, schools, and critical transportation routes for first responders.
The purpose of design-build is helping connect people, companies and resources in the most seamless and successful way possible, while safeguarding customers from the built-in setbacks and pitfalls of poorly timed handoffs between separate companies. With team members from Kiely managing everything from environmental permitting to community outreach, every effort was made to actively build a reliable, lasting legacy for the customer.
A project of this magnitude — happening right in the middle of everyday life — entails a substantial amount of coordination. By communicating effectively with all these different stakeholders, we were able to anticipate their concerns and solve issues before they even happened.
At the completion of the project, the utility company received a comprehensive documentation package that met all the regulatory requirements, and a safe, reliable new natural gas pipeline.
